Effortless Success: The Secret to Joyful Achievement
The Surprising Lesson I Learned from My First Marathon
After a wonderful trip to Xinjiang, I stepped on the scale and saw my weight had bounced back to an all-time high. It was a wake-up call. I decided to challenge myself and signed up for a marathon—well, not a full marathon, but the shortest entry-level option: a 5K race scheduled for two months later. For someone like me, who never runs, 5 kilometers felt daunting. But I was determined.
A Rocky Start
Life, of course, had other plans. Shortly after signing up, my child came down with a severe flu, with a fever soaring to 40°C. Taking care of him consumed my days and nights for two weeks. And just when I thought we were in the clear, I caught the flu myself and ended up bedridden for another two weeks.
Suddenly, my two-month training window was halved. I now had just one month left to prepare for my very first 5K. Could I really pull this off?
The Strategy That Changed Everything
My approach was simple but powerful: small, incremental progress every single day.
I committed to running just five minutes longer than the day before. Not more, not less—just five minutes. It was manageable and specific. Every time I hit my target, I rewarded myself with a mental pat on the back and celebrated the small win.
That first day was rough. After 15 minutes of running, my legs felt like lead. Every step beyond that point felt impossible. But I stuck to the plan: five more minutes the next day. And the day after that. And the day after that.
I focused only on each day’s goal—not the entire month ahead, not the looming 5K race. Each day was its own unit of success. If something unexpected happened and I couldn’t train, I didn’t beat myself up. I simply accepted it, reset, and picked up the plan the following day.
To make the process enjoyable, I paired my runs with music that energized me. I let the rhythm distract me from the discomfort, and soon, running started to feel less like a chore and more like a personal escape.
A Joyful Transformation
In less than three weeks, I was running the full 5 kilometers in a single session. By race day, I was not just prepared—I was excited.
The day of the race was magical. My son cheered for me from the sidelines, his voice full of pride and enthusiasm. Knowing he was watching and rooting for me added a whole new layer of joy and motivation. I completed my first 5K in under an hour, a personal victory I will always treasure.
But the most surprising part? The process of getting there wasn’t grueling at all. After that first tough day, the rest of the journey was light, fun, and rewarding. I was still able to balance parenting, entrepreneurship, and self-care while preparing for a goal that once seemed impossible.
The Lesson: Success Doesn’t Have to Be Hard
When we think of marathons—or any ambitious goal, for that matter—what often comes to mind is struggle, sacrifice, and immense effort. But my experience taught me something profound: success doesn’t have to feel difficult. With the right approach, even big goals can be achieved effortlessly and joyfully.
The key lies in micro-compounding, a term that I invented myself, which means: selecting long-term goal that will yield outsized growth in the long run, but making small, consistent efforts daily that build on each other over time. For example, by focusing on just five extra minutes each day, I transformed what seemed impossible into something not only achievable but genuinely enjoyable.
This concept isn’t limited to running. It applies to every aspect of life—your career, health, relationships, and personal growth. It’s about letting go of the idea that progress requires suffering and instead embracing the idea that small, manageable actions, done consistently, lead to extraordinary results.
How Micro-Compounding Can Upgrade Your Life
In my own life, I’ve seen the power of micro-compounding ripple far beyond this one marathon:
In Parenting: When my son was diagnosed with a significant speech delay at age 3, I dedicated just 20 minutes a day to working with him on language exercises in the last three years. Over time, those daily moments added up, and today he communicates confidently and thrives in school as a 6-year-old boy.
In Entrepreneurship: While pregnant and raising a newborn, I could only dedicate two hours a day to my startup. But by focusing on high-impact tasks, I secured angel funding one-month before giving birth to my son, and secured my first institutional VC fund within give months after giving brith, and later in the next 5 years, raised 5 millions in total of venture capital for my startup. It also started from the 2-hour of daily effort.
In Self-Care: By committing to just 10 minutes of meditation and one-hour journaling each day, I’ve cultivated an accumulated and exponential spiritual growth that supplies me with constant positive energy in my busy life as an entrepreneur and mother to a point that i don’t need to gather energy out of any external world such as money, status, power, relationship to make myself feel secure and loved, but I become self-sufficient to love myself unconditionally and love others as well with abundant source of love.
The beauty of micro-compounding is that it doesn’t require a massive time investment or extraordinary effort. It’s about showing up consistently, taking small but meaningful steps, and trusting the process.
